Streamyx (DSL) and Windows ME issues.

Streamyx, a Malaysian brand for Internet broadband services: After waiting months for it to become available in my area, I finally got it a few days ago!

However my joy was short-lived and quickly turned into frustration when I wasn't able to send emails and other issues started to appear in the first few hours of using the broadband service.

Trouble symptoms:
  • Cannot send emails with MS Outlook. Everytime I tried to send email out, the emails just remained in the Outbox with errors reported like:
    Quote:
Sending ' reported error (0x8004210B): The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
    or
    Quote:
Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0B): 'Unknown Error 0x800CCC0B'
  • Cannot FTP large files to my web server.
  • Cannot submit a web form including large chunks of text in a textarea.

Attempted Fixes:
  • Installed all 3 Service Packs for OfficeXP. Maybe it fixed some other issues with my copy of Office but it didn't fix the above-mentioned problems.

Final Solution:
  • Edit the MTU setting in the Windows Registry for both, the dialup adapter and the Network Card. I set mine to 1492. I don't know yet if setting only the Network Card's MTU fixes it, I haven't yet experimented. When I do, I will update this thread. See the HOWTO below (coming next).

You know I never thought about that being the problem. I have edited both my computers at home and laptop, but the only reason I have ever edited them was to tweak my connection. Thanks for posting this will come in really handy.

Well the be honest that about the only one I have I open that MTU up until I start to lose data then just go back to the last setting I was able to us without data loss. It works really well. I remember when I first got my cable connection I was looking for ways to make it faster The MTU was the best way I will have to look through some of my old bookmarks and see if I can't find a little more.

I'll post what I find here.
