Outlook Express

Recently I joined the adsl club. Yes, no kidding. I started to use outlook express to send/receive mails from other emails accounts. At first, the hotmail worked fine, but the last couple days this is what happened:

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 12019, Error Number: 0x80004005

Header download for the 'Inbox' folder did not complete. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 12019, Error Number: 0x80004005

Do you have any solution???

I have had the same problems in the past and I'm sad to say that I had it some much so that I stop downloading my hotmail that way. I will do a little research into this and see what I find.

Most word I see on this indicates a server problem, give it a few days and see if it works then.

IMO this should not apply to downloading email, but I know that some broadband Internet service providers have been known to block certain email related ports to prevent spamming. (Just an fyi)

I'm looking at your problem from the outside in - I know how I'm getting this error but I'm trying to find a workaround for something else.

I installed a SonicWall Firewall and made rules that don't allow any traffic to flow from one of my customer's servers (basically all ports are closed). I'm slowly making rules that allow certain ports on this server to retrieve mail. However, I've opened Ports 80 & 443 (HTTP & HTTPS respectively) and Hotmail is still having a problem. Looks like Outlook Express 6/Hotmail are using specific ports or port redirects to acess their servers. By the way, this server had no protection from the internet previously (scary) and their OE6/Hotmail was working without problems.

Basically the solution to your problem is that OE6 does not have access to specific ports and you need to find out why - i.e. firewall, software, communists, etc.

My problem - does anyone know exactly how OE6 communicates with Hotmail servers and does anyone know how to configure a firewall to let proper communications occur?

Figured it out...

The DNS is where my problem was. I wasn't giving DNS access to the server. Once I granted DNS server access to the server (port 53 UDP & TCP), I was instantly able to poll hotmail for new email.

Hopefully this sheds light on other's problems - check your machine's DNS entries and port availability.
