Question

TCP/UDP ports

Is there a way I can manually close a TCP/UDP port or make it 'listen?'

To my knowledge there is no way to manually close a TCP/UDP port. You can however determine what TCP/UDP ports are open by using netstat -a or by using Steve Gibson's Shields UP! program (www.grc.com) and then close the services that are using that port that should close the port. Firewalls are the best way to close and control ports and the best of these are hardware firewalls. If you tell me a little more about what you’re trying to do then I may be able to help out A little more.

Nah, I'm not trying to do anything in particular, just asking random questions that pop into my head. I want to learn as much as I can.

This *might* work. In Win2K:

Start -> Settings -> Network & Dial Up -> Properties of your LAN connection -> Internet Protocol -> Properties -> Advanced -> Options -> TCP/IP filtering

Well, actually it's possible to close TCP/UDP ports...by killing the process running them! That's the method used by an incredible software I regularly use, called, ActivePorts..it's available on the Net.

Cool! But it looks like it's not made for win98... At least I know it's out there.
