Can someone tell me how to...

Hey...

Well, I took the advice of SamTam in my other thread and I'm creating a website for someone for free (That someone being my school). Everything is going great BUT! I need to know how to create my own forum. Something like this with the GID logo on the top etc... A good example would be this site's forum or This site's forum http://www.worldsarmy.com/modules.php?name=Forums. It would love it if it was user friendly and very easy on a 15 year old newbie webmaster, i.e; One of those Coded one's or something. I would like it however to be like the one in the {WorldsArmy} website, where it has been placed inbetween a border and all other buttons that you see in the Home page are still visable. So if someone could help me, I would be pretty thankful. Thank you.

;-)

Hi Asitha,

Glad to see you moving from plain ol' HTML web pages to using server-side, ready-made, scripts.

This forum script costs money - so scratch that idea for now...

On the other hand, you're in luck, phpBB (a free to use, popular forum script) has just released a new version today and you can download the script by going to this page and looking for the phpBB-2.0.8.zip link (that's the latest version to-date).

BEFORE you even think about script choices, you'd want to find out if your (school's) web server has PHP and MySQL support. Otherwise, you're stuck.

Asitha, have you set up a web server on your PC yet? If not, please do...

You will go crazy not being able to test any server-side script locally before you can even think about uploading it to the web server.

I can't help you with the image thingy but a web server is just a piece of software that will allow you host your own web pages on your own PC. So let's say you create a homepage and filename it index.html somewhere on your HDD. Start your web server software, open a browser window and typing http://localhost/index.html will take you to your homepage stored on your own PC!

The most popular web server today is Apache. You can download the software off apache.org. If you have questions trying to install the server, start a new thread in the Apache Server Forum here.

:\...Ummm...

O well, after reading all that, it's kinda confused me ... ??: ..So I think I'm just gonna go ahead with Proboards.com ...That's a much easier board to use..So I guess I'll stick to the basics, and when I have more time..And not much school to worry about, then I'll take all the time to come back to this forum and try to see how this works.. ..Until then..cya

Thanks alot for the help
