64 bit processors

Hi there again guys!
Im a little confused at the moment about 64 bit processors. currently I have a 32 bit,but am thinking of upgrading to 64 bit in the near future. i ahve heard a lot of good stuff about 64 bit AMD processors. apart from buying a new MB what else will I need!? I heard a scary rumour that 64 bit is not compatible with any programs or windows versionS!?? can anyone clear this mess up for me or post some links that explain it all?
cheers in advance

A new motherboard yes I think that’s all you need. Yes not much run with 64 bit yet although it won't be long. But to my understanding the 64 bit chip can operate at 32 bit as well. I'll see if I can't find some links and post them soon for you.

CyrixOnFire will become famous soon enough
Athlon 64s have 64 bit capabilities, for when you run 64 bit programs, but for just the current windows and linux operating systems, the Athlon 64 runs in 'legacy mode,' as they call it. Basically legacy mode is 32 bit. So essentially, it will not run as a 64 bit processor until you have software made for it. Even in legacy (32 bit) mode, the FX-51 model outperforms even the P4 3.2 extreme in gaming benchmarks. To me, the current best buy is the Athlon 64 3000.

AMD 64 bit processor is a good choices.you would get a 64 bit operating system from MS for 260 days free .it can also run 32 bit software.
