What's the no CD patch? Is that for the DOS version?

I appreciate your efforts! Colonization was the first PC game I ever bought and I've been playing it since '95! I'd hate to have to give it up now!

Anyway, it seems to crash when the year turns to 1660 -- I'm not sure if there's some event that's going to happen to make it crash on that year. There doesnt seem to be any founding fathers impending and I've gotten about 6 or 7 already with no problems.

Re: Getting Colonization to run under WinXP?

I wonder what ever happened to the problem of playing Colonization on an XP. I followed these four pages with great interest as I also have the game! We all need people like PCXGAMER.

Re: Getting Colonization to run under WinXP?

Hi PCXGamer!

Thanks for your prompt reply! I have the MS-DOS 5.0 ("or higher") version purchased in April '94 I believe. My XP is up-to-date with Microsoft's automatic update service.

Thanks again Good Buddy!

Prompt reply man I wish everyone was that nice. Anyhow I have never had problems with the DOS verison of the game and in fact still play it on my PC I don't currently have it install and I'm at work at the moment and I'm unable to test it but tonight is my last night for 4 days and I will install it in the morning and test it out and and see if I can found the problem.

But I have heard of some others having a few problems have you tried coping the cd-rom to you're hard drive and just to be sure do you set up a icon to execute the program or do you go through the command prompt?

Also quick note if you are getting any error codes or desc of what is happening we can start back a step one and try to go step by step to help resolve this problem.

Re: Getting Colonization to run under WinXP?

Loading the CD into C drive seems to be what it needed! Until then I kept getting an error message that the file COALDATA0.dll couldn't be found.

I'm now into my first game in years! Thanks to you!

PS Do you have sound in yours? None here.

Re: Getting Colonization to run under WinXP?

OK I played around with it for a bit have not tested this in the long run so not sure how well it will work.

To get sound follow this:

Go to Start and then Run type in cmd to open a command prompt. ok now go to the dir that has colonization in it for example:

cd\ then hit enter
cd mps then hit enter
cd colonize then hit enter

I would now be at " c:\mps\colonize " now once here type in " install " now this should bring you to a screen and there should be a config option there click it and then choose "General Midi" and then "Gold Sound Standard" then exit out and type in colonize to start the game and you should have sound.

Now as I said I know this worked for me but I didn't test it for long in the game so I'm not sure if it will cause problem or not but let me know if it does and we can see about it.

PS: you may get a warning in the command window about memory don't worry about it that normal and it shouldn't cause problems.

I hope this help and please let me know if I can be of more help.

Re: Getting Colonization to run under WinXP?

I have been playing colonization on my dell optiplex gx270 windows xp professional service pack 2 pentium4 proccessor 4 gb ram. When i go to my next turn it gives me the following error every time which prevents me from continuing.

"An error has occurred in your application.
If you chose Ignore, you should save your work in a new file.
If you chose Close, your application will terminate."

Obvioulsy i hit the ignore then i get the following message.

"COLONIZE caused a General Protection Fault in
module COLONIZE.EXE at 0006:34A2
Chose close. COLONIZE will close."

Any help would be nice, ty.
