Simple questions?Greetings all,
I'm a new member nere at GID & had a couple of what are probably simple questions. I haven't scoured the forum, but I have browsed it & haven't yet come across what I'm looking for. So far, my development applications consist of: Macromedia DW MX Apache 2.0.4.8 mySQL 4.0.1.8 I know I may need to add to this arrangement in the near future but my immediate goal is to get these 3 "singing in harmony" as soon as possible. My entire goal is to simply have Apache running on my Windows 2000 Pro OS to use as a test platform for my DW webs before actually deploying them to my host...to make sure that scripts run & function properly, etc. I have a clean installation of Apache with no changes to the httpd.conf file yet - however, I did end up having to re-install it once, so I wound up with the httpd.default.conf file also. The installation of Apache has been verified by going to the default Apache localhost index. I appear to be on localhost:80. Does anyone here have a clear explanation of how to configure my httpd file so that I can simply test dynamic webs on my home pc before beaming them up to Scotty? I'm also wondering if Apache & my ISP network are running on the same port? Not my hosting service, but my ISP. Is there a way to find out what port my provider is running?? I have a broadband connection. If both servers are running on the same port, will this affect the download speeds of my ISP account?? BTW, I did just return home with SAMS Teach Yourself Apache 2 in 24 Hours as well as SAMS Teach Yourself TCP/IP in 24 Hours - for references, basically - but I'm hoping to get some info here before I can finish reading the book - not to mention, people's experience count for much more than can be written about in books. Please advise as I am trying desperately to get the heck out of MS Front Page & those stoopid webbot things...& learn how a real server works. Thanks for any & all info & comments. Netizen Dave |

Hello Netizen Dave,
I regret that no one replied to your thread soon enough. Maybe it would have helped a lot if you had used a more descriptive title when posting your message (instead of "Simple questions?"). I know I skip threads by title when I am in a rush. Anyway, I DID read your message yesterday and eventhough I have done exactly what you want to do, I reserved my comments because my setup is SO different from yours. I use Windows ME, Apache 1.3+ and I STILL use a dialup service Anyway, if you hadn't already read it; here's an old article that I wrote that may give you some ideas - http://www.desilva.biz/apache/virtual.html. |
