Re: compress avi's for a dvd?

Hello a little yak,

I have this software installed on my machine, and it works wonderfully to convert any video; also allowing you to set the various options yourself. The software: eRightSoft's Super.

And yes, it is free.

On the other hand if you ever get tired having to (convert and) burn CD/DVDs like me, you get yourself a media player like WDTV.

Oh, if you are looking for a software simply for archival purposes, I would strongly recommend 7zip (also another software I use very often).

Also free, and better compression ratios - at least better than zip.

Re: compress avi's for a dvd?

The DVD standard is pretty fixed, at least that is what I understand. You may use the Super software I mentioned earlier to re-encode the video/audio with smaller bit rates but that would affect the picture/sound quality for sure.

So if you want to transfer them to a DVD so it can be played by a DVD player, you are only limited to adjusting the bit rates as described above. If I am wrong, someone please correct me.

Now if your DVD player also supports divx then you can target that codec making your videos much smaller but with little loss of video quality.

According to this, YES!

You can use Super to encode video into divx.

I am glad. If you have any problems using Super -- it can be a bit daunting at first -- do not hesitate to post your questions here.

Good luck.
