The Yahoo! crawler seems quite good at following links aswell...I've had several sites indexed without having submitted any of them.

I really can't say for sure but I think this YahooBot doesn't handle 301 re-directs very well. At the time I submitted gidwebhosts.com, I also 're-submitted' gidforums.com and for the first time got to see the homepage off these forums listed in Yahoo! with the correct URL (yesterday).
