Analyse audio in C

Could anyone help me. I am trying to analyse audio signals in C but i don't know where to start or what to do. I have come to realise that wav is not the best way to record a signal and i'm hoping that there is already a program or audio type that can be easily made use of.

Thank you very much.

Why not? What's better? It's notcompressed. It's the format of audio CD's. What's wrong with it?

That's true. mmm. Well what i'm interested in doing is getting a audio signal into C and analysing it. I seem to be hitting a brick wall wherever i try.

When you say, "getting a audio signal into C," do you mean, "How can I use the sound card on my computer to get audio samples into a file, which I can then process with a C program?"

If that's what you are asking, I suggest googling (or whatever the verb form of your favorite search engine is) "sound card programming".
