New to programmingHello everyone!!! I am trying to learn how to program. My only problem is I am the type that is hands on. So basically reading around the web hasnt been helping me too much. At least until i get things set to actually work with some of it. So heres my question. When i am finished I want to make a website which is fast loading, user friendly( which is a two part thing. One design and 2 automation). Now i was told to download Apache and PhP. Now although i havent done so yet. no one has any idea as to what i need to download to actually design the site. I was looking at Apache,TcL ( I think) located at Apache too. i believe i need PhP and MySql also. And how about a website design system? If anyone has a list of the basic items that you would need to create a full website from design to the database. It would be greatly helpful. And FREE if possible
Also can this be done on my computer without paying for a server and hosting and domain name while Im learning? Thanks in advance. punkin111 |

Hello punkin111,
Before anyone can point you to the download links, you'd have to tell us whether you're going to be using this on Windows (i.e. XP or ME or 2003 etc.), Linux or something SCO dreamed up. __________________

Sorry bout that :)I guess it would have been easier if I would have included that I have windows mill and will be using that to practice on. Now as far as after I learned and have something im not sure where it will end up being on.. I'll have to figure that out as time goes on.

Isn't that the same thing? After all, SCO does charge you $699.00 IP fee for using Linux. ![]() |

No, it's important to know what you will be using when you're attempting your FIRST install, once you get through that, everything else will be a WHOLE lot easier
So Windows Millenium, huh? That's what I use... First off, download the Apache Httpd Web Server; there are 2 versions at the moment (ver. 1.3+ and ver. 2.0+). I would suggest going for the 1.3+ version first.... go to this page (http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi) and select the link for Win32 Binary (Self extracting). Install that and if you read the Install Notes, you should be able to get it up and running quite easily. Come back if you get stuck or if you want to discuss installing PHP next. __________________
