Question

Is it safe giving away my computer's system information to someone else?

A software company has asked to send my system information to help me solve the problem caused by their software. is it safe? and does he really need that?

Thanks!

Depends on what information he's asking. Your full name, social security number, passport picture? Probably not. Your graphics card, operating system...? Probably. And yes, he might really need information like hardware to solve some specific problem.

Whether you should give him a list of all your programs or run a possible diagnostics tool he's asking you to run is up to you to decide. Personally I probably would not. Unless, of course, the program produces some plain text file which you yourself can read before submitting. (Where "submitting" means copying the contents to an email message or similar.)

But then again, I'm paranoid.
