This is a very big subject, and, I think, cannot be covered very well in an on-line forum like this. (It's not just a matter of a few headers!)

For starters, go to http://msdn.microsoft.com, enter serial communications in the search box. click go, and you will have lots and lots of opportunities to get information from the horse's mouth.
