Apache runs multiple perl processes which take 100% CPU

Hi There,

i've got a bit of a problem. Every so often my server (randomly) starts multiple perl processes (sometimes up to 15 processes, run by user apache) which take 100% CPU. Because the CPU is at 100% the websites are slow and/or not accessable.

i'm investigating this problem but can i somehow make the apache server run only, let's say, 5 perl processes at a time? Or something similar? Or some other way not to get the processes take up to 100% CPU and a high load?

it's just to leave the sites up and accessable for the time beeing and to buy me some more time to investigate the problem.

any ideas??
