Internet explorer causes my computer to freeze

so this is my situation...

...when I open internet explorer my computer freezes then when I restart it and I click on my user name to log in and it freezes. over and over again.
the only way then to get into my computer is to go into safe mode, then when I restart from safe mode and try loging in on my user name in normal mode it will work... but then explorer still will freeze it...

-I've used Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to try to remove anything bad, and AVG to look for something that would be attacking me.. but there both clean... at this point I would say to just reinstall windows.. but with this computer I would like to avoid it if at all possible!

any tips or advice would be helpful!!

If I were you, the next thing I would try is to create a NEW user name and see if the problem exists for that profile too. Is this Windows XP?

Re: Internet explorer causes my computer to freeze

I am not sure about this but I think you need the CD to run the Windows XP Recovery Console, which is what I was going to suggest next.

This is Internet Explorer 7? I just looked at my Installed Programs and I see Internet Explorer 7 there. So I must have installed it sometime in the past, somewhere along the way (I use Firefox mostly). If I had installed it once, I suppose I can install it again.

Re: Internet explorer causes my computer to freeze

A couple of other things that might be worth checking:

1. Do you have any IE add-ons?

Try to start IE without the add-ons. I don't have IE7 myself, but from what I read, this is simply a right-click of the IE icon, and choose the 'start without addons' option. If this works, without trouble, then one of the addons is the culprit!

2. IE7 does have a built-in reset/repair utility for itself.
These would be the steps:

1. Start Internet Explorer 7.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
4. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm.
[I know you said it crashes at step one, but maybe this could be done in safe-mode too? I'm not sure]
After the repair, then it might be necessary to visit update.microsoft.com to re-apply any IE patch(es)/updates.
