Apache 1.3, XP problem

I am using Apache 1.3 on XP. When I run the configuation test, I get syntax ok, but when I try and run a php file, it will not access it(the php doc is in the htdoc file). I get a message saying Windows cannot open file, and directs me to the php.net page.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? I have put the php.ini file in c:\windows.

I reinstalled Apache, PHP and MySQL....when I hit the test for Apache, an empty box opens (like DOS), then closes after 2 seconds. When I run a php file, the message box directs me to the php.com site, to download PHP. The apache is not reading the php at all.If I type in local host, there a message "cannot read page" offers to detect my network settings.
If I have IIS runing, I and run localhost I get the IIS page.

What site do you recommend as a tutorial for downloading Apache on XP.

The DOS prompt that disappears may help. Instead of double-clicking on the app, open up a dos prompt, navigate tot the directory with the tester program & execute it from there. Whatever message it's giving will stay there for you to read.

Have you got Apache working at all, that's the priority. Does it serve up any HTML pages at all? Have you added lines to the httpd.conf file telling Apache how to handle php files?

You could also check the Apache logs, to see if it's having problems. It's in the Apache dir/logs.
