Go Fast

I'm interested in making my computer run faster, as it's been going kind of slow lately. I'm already buying some new RAM (going to buy the maximum that is avalible for Windows XP). I also run McAfee and AdAware often, so that is not a problem. Does anyone out there know of any quick fixes or any other hardware or software I could get to improve my run speed?I dont not mind spending a little bit of money.

I mainly use my computer for Online Gaming and web browsing.

Re: Go Fast

If you have active anti-virus scanning enabled, turn it off. As long as you practice save browsing, you don't need to worry about real-time scanning. Just set it to scan your system once a week and you should be fine.

If you don't reboot your computer often, try doing it once a week. You might also consider reformatting and reinstalling Windows. The Registry and file system built up a lot of crap over time. A reboot can minimize the cruft that can build up; a reinstall ensures Windows will be running like it's brand new.

Obviously if you do that you need to back up all your important data and reinstall your programs but you should notice a significant performance increase. In the old days, before XP, it was recommended to reload Windows every 6 to 12 months. With XP, you probably only need to do it every 18-24 months. But it's still recommended.

Don't forget to defrag, clear your cache, remove unnecessary programs, etc. The less data your HD has to thrash through, the quicker it can get you what you want.

If you are using IE to surf, consider switching to a different browser. Opera is currently the fastest but Firefox has more plug-ins. (I personally use Opera and recommend you at least try it). Plus, you won't have to worry about as many viruses and bad things using a non-MS browser.

If you're adventurous, you could install Linux, at least as a dual boot or virtual OS. You can streamline it even more than Windows and not have to worry about viruses. If you just use it for web browsing and light office-style applications, you will be surprised with the responsiveness. Plus, a lot of online games are now compatible with it.

May be u havn't cleant up your PC for a long time or u have got a virus or spyware on your PC.I suggest you to run a virus test firstly with your virus scanner. If it dosen't work.
You may definetly need to clean up your PC.Download a nice PC cleaner to clean your PC,it will be faster.
