Question

Which processor?

Hi all.

I'm upgrading soon and want to know which processor I should get. I'm looknig at either an Athlon 2600+/2800+ or a P4 2.8GHz w/ 800MHz FSB.

Is it worth spending the extra money for a P4? I'll mainly be using it for gaming.

Thanks :-)

Well... you get into the entire concept of multitasking with the P4 2.8+ with 800FBS, which is a killer deal.

How much are you thinking about spending? I have seen some very nice systems on ebay. A recent one I just found was this one here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tegory=52 476

Take a look at the specs for it. Only downside is it does not come with a DVD-RW and the RAM should be CL2.0 not the CL3.0.

I went through this AMD vs Intel dilemma a couple of years ago and ended up buying an AMD. What will be the primary use of this system?

Mostly gaming, a bit of programming and perhaps a small amount of video editing (although that's pretty unlikely).

I think you'll find most gamers will reccomend the AMD products with a nvidia mobo.

OK, AMD it is then.

What RAM speed would you recommend. I want to get 1GB. I read somewhere that PC2700 is the best speed for an AthlonXP. Is that right?

I'd recommend the following spec i built recently. Great value (about 400 quid) and very stable.

AMD Athlon XP2600+ (make sure its 333mhz fsb, not 266)
512MB DDR 333mhz
Shuttle AN35NU mobo, SocketA, Nvidia Nforce2
Onboard Sound, LAN, AGP 8x, 5x PCI, DDR400 max, ATX,
USB 2.0
Palit FX5200 128DDR Video tv + dvi
160GB Seagate ATA100 8MB cache
Pioneer 4x 106 DVD-RW

Its not the fastest but probably the best overall value at the moment. Great for overclocking apparently. Loads of space for pci cards and extra memory, up to 3GB.
