Try typing exit and then when the computer restarts, try to eject the cd. Alot of installation programs lock the CD drive. This is probably a normal thing.

Hehe, yes and no. I am a civil engineer, but I own a small engineering firm and I have to keep things running...

Glad it worked out for you. Come back if you have any other problems. Just so you know there is an entire forum here dedicated to windows problems. You may get a better response to your windows questions there

Good Luck!

thats a computer saved from the scrapheap! - i dont know how you find your dell but mine had a new mother board after 3 mths and now this - it is now out of warranty so i bought a cheap HP desktop to keep my business going - even a repair shop couldnt fix derek! the general consensus online appears to be that i could have a memory problem but lots of people have differnet ideas - yours certainly worked - do you know about hacking and that kind of thing too? any interesting conspiracy theories in the computer world such as who are putting all these bugs about and why?? i managed to stop the pop ups which i think are started by the people trying to sell you stuff to get rid of them?

Its like anything. Sometimes you get a lemon and all it takes is one bad experience to sour you on the whole company. I buy several computers a year for my business through Dell and they are actually pretty good to me. I've had my problems, but they have always fixed them. My main machine now is a Dell laptop, Inspiron 8500 and I love it.

What other kind of problems have you been having? This problem we just fixed seemed to be basically a missing operating system file. Has this happened before?

Hehe. I don't know a thing about hacking, etc. I've got no need for it. Alot of these viruses, etc. come from script-kiddies. Unfortunately, with the exploits that have been found in windows, it makes it pretty easy to write these things and if you look hard enough, you can find detailed instructions on the net.

Yeah, I've heard that conspiracy theory before and to some extent it is true. Isn't it funny that alot of the pop-ups advertise software to get rid of pop-ups? It sounds like you've stopped the pop-ups, but I always recommend mozilla to people who are looking for a good easy solution...

Anyway, its been nice chatting with you. Hope to see you around here again.

Cheers,
d.

Hi..

I was trying to follow these instructions to fix the same problem on my computer, only everytime it asks me for the Administrator password and I don't have one, as far as I know, I've never had one. I hit enter and it just asks me again. This repeats 3 times and then it tells me since the Administrator PW has been incorrectly entered 3 times in a row, my computer will have to restart. So this just all goes in a big cycle. Any ideas?

Hi WaterWitch. Welcome to GIDForums. Do you have any idea who set up the computer for you? I am assuming that this is happening once you get to the recovery console page and not when you are trying to get to your bios right?

I really don't know how to find an administrator password on a system and it probably is not easy to do with good reason. Unless you can find who may have set it up or a way to get that password, reinstalling windows may be the only option.

If it comes to this, I do have a way that you can somewhat easily get your data off of your drive before you re-install windows.

Sorry...
