Old Games On 2k and XP

Hi everyone, my problem here is that i get a very random error on master of orion II running on win2k or xp...

The original game was designed for dos (as far as i remember) and then a patch for win 95 was released...

The random error its the following: randomly it gets out of the game and closes it. May you play all the day withouth a problem, may you can´t play more than a few game turns...

Running it on compatibility mode doesn`t really help. Instead, it makes it more unstable (as far as i tryed).

More details on what happen:
-When you capture a oponent colony, moving prisoners from a job to another -from the colony screen- makes it crash directly, while doing it by the "colonies manager" (window that open by clicking the colonies button on main game screen) seems to work fine.
-At random times when you get too strong it graphically crashes, letting you play but some screens will not be seen at all, while others may look weird.
-At random times it crashes and just get you out of the game withouth any explanation.

If someone else know how to fix this problem let me know.
Also, i`ve got some experience "fighting" with some old games to make it work on xp or 2k, if someone need some help just ask and if i can i`ll help.

do you have the orginal game (dos version)? I don't have this game so I can't test it. But if you have the dos version you could try DOSbox. I have used it in the past to get old games running.

I had tried it on dosbox in some times, but it doesn´t work anyway... and yes, i have the original and a patch that updates the game not only letting it run on win95 but also fixes some bugs...
I was thinking it could be something with the graphic card, since depending on the computer it is installed it runs withouth a problem or start crashing randomly...

since now i dont have all the computers where i tryed it at my disposal, i could not say...

I have seen in some other places on the net, about disabling all DirectDraw acceleration. Yes, that turns off everything, including Direct3D, so you'll have to set this back to "enable" if you want to play more modern games.

opened DXDIAG.EXE (just open up Start button/Run/ and type "dxdiag").

Then go to the Display tab and *disabled* all DirectDraw acceleration.
