Law of Attraction

I am sure some of you have already seen the video "The Secret" or perhaps you have read the book.

My sister gave me the DVD late last year (August 2007) and I found it absolutely fascinating! Of course by saying that you already know what I think.

For those of you hearing about this for the first time, here is a link to Wikipedia.

What is your opinion on the Law of Attraction?

Re: Law of Attraction

Personally, I'm torn. I do believe in Jungian synchronicity, because I've seen it in action. However, the law of attraction seems more like wish fulfillment to me.

Humans have a tendency to remember what they want. In this case, I think people are more likely to remember when "their prayers were answered" rather than all the times they were ignored. Additionally, a postive mindset towards a goal can help steer someone unconciously towards it, leading to their wish being fulfilled.

So, I guess ultimately I think it's just people remembering when things worked out rather than remembering all the times things didn't. Plus, how long do you have to wait to decide whether want you want to happen happens? Given enough time, nearly anything is possible.

Re: Law of Attraction

It is a totally neat idea though, isn't it?

For the past one year, I have been focusing (my thoughts) on what I want and I have been rarely disappointed. Of course the easy ones come easily and works almost immediately; like visualising an empty road, free of traffic, when you're about take the car out.

Actually, the law of attraction, as they describe it, doesn't discriminate between a BAD thought and a GOOD thought. They claim you eventually attract what you think about most (good or bad).

That is the desired effect! We both know that this is the real secret, and they mention it in the video too. This (DVD) would be a great Christmas gift for someone in my life who is particularly toxic.

Re: Law of Attraction

It seems pretty silly an unscientific to me. The idea that thoughts can affect reality is far fetched.

Re: Law of Attraction

Unscientific maybe, but silly? Think about it, every single thing you do is a result of a thought process.

In a nutshell, all they are suggesting you do is observe your thoughts so they are focused on what you really want, not on the things you don't want. Sounds logical to me.

I have always wanted to destroy the world. I have a powerful mind, do you think this is possible?

Re: Law of Attraction

It's far from silly. At this point, it's also unscientific because it cannot be scientifically tested -- yet. But that doesn't make it false. After all, many science facts were untestable for many years (centuries) until recently. They were still facts regardless of no scientific proof.

I've heard from many people that have shown the concept to be, at a minimum, quite plausible.

Well, there are popular bumper-sticker, buttons, and t-shirts that promote the idea:

"Knowledge is Power. Power Corrupts. Study hard. Be Evil!"

...or see these shirts.

...and this pin-on button.

As just a couple of examples.
