Favicons (shortcut icons) in Geocities

I am having the worst time trying to get my favicon to work in geocities! I have seen that it won't upload .ico files , so I have used the code for the gif file. Has anyone done this before? If so, what do I need to do? I placed the code
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://www.geocities.com/coastywife2002/favicon.gif">

between the <head> tags on my page. Is there something more I need to do???

I would appreciate any suggestions

Your icon should not be a gif, it should be a .ico extension, i.e. it should be an icon image like you see on your desktop.

I recommend www.irfanview.com to create this file. Create a 32x32 bitmap image and save it as .ico. Then upload it to your webspace as favicon.ico and change your meta tag to reflect the change.

This should sort your problem.

Wow, I was surprised to learn that Geocities does NOT support .ico files.

Just a silly suggestion, why not host just the .ico file someplace else that allows hosting images/icons... ?

You have a BEAUTIFUL site... I love everything about it... even the falling whatchamacallits!

Thank you! I appreciate your help . I had actually heard there was a way to do it in Geocities, but I can't figure it out and I think my brian is dead now LOL. If I thought putting the Icons into a different host would work, I would do it. I just don't want to have to move all my pages. I believe that you have to have the code linked directly to the host that the pages are on. I am not sure though, and I may give it a shot. Great suggestion! Thanks for the compliments on my site also

To be absolutely frank, I've never tried it the way you described it...

but supposing that would have worked on geocities had they supported the .ico files, then it should work off another host...

Doh, I really should read posts a little more closely before posting I didn't think Geocities blocked .ico files. Did you try .bmp?

GIFs are encoded and compressed and the browser would have difficulty making it a real icon. Bitmaps aren't encoded though.
