It should be one file (Class) and it should not slow down everything..

It needs to be released under GPL or something that can fit inside a GPL project.

The main part is that it should be easy to use.
because this is a public project my users should be able to modify templates for there own needs

I can also modify a template engine to make it fit and speed it up, but the smaller the better

Before I wrote my own, I was using pattemplate. In fact desilva.biz and gtopsites are still using it. This will change when I update these sites of course.

Also, a while back I was looking at this site too.

pattemplate seems to be a bit more advanced, wihch can be useful.. but i don't need it

bTemplate seems more easy in use, basic things like a simple loop are included.
the only thing missing is error handling, which is actually good because i'm going to write my own function for that

Yes, don't be impressed by the look of pattemplate's site. Refer to your own benchmarks or take something simple and make it better.

bTemplate if coded simpler (I'd imagine) so should be ideal for you to extend / modify.
