A general problem that is always being resolved is that of scheduling. You can map that to any area you like (processes, jobs, money allocation, class schedules, pay increases, etc.)
If in that scheduling you decided to categorize things and allow dynamic reallocation of resources a database would sure be helpful.
Not sure of your interest, but that provides several avenues to follow.
