when the system first start try getting to the bios setting and check to see if you can see the CPU temp. if the CPU is over heating it will cause this, and it only take the CPU a min or two to overheat. I could be a lot of things if it not the CPU try checking the memory.

I am not sure how to fix your problem but if you have access to another computer you can get a hard drive converter to connect your hard drive from the computer your are having a problem with to the USB of another computer so you can pull your information off it. I did a quick look and fond the following web page of a converter that works with both SATA and IDE drives.
www.cooldrives.com

P.S.
I am having the same problem right now and will look at the CPU temp to see if this is my problem.

Good luck

YOU HAVE CONFLICTING SOFTWARE!!!

What was the last software that you installed, after this problem starting happening? Or maybe what was the last update you installed?

You can either
A. Boot into Safe Mode and do a system restore
B. Boot into Safe Mode and remove all your third party software. e.g Limewire etc etc
