Can you learn about web design without college?I am a father/husband working 70 to 90 hrs a week and I am the only bread winner of the household. I do not live near a college. I have been trying to figure out if it is possible to learn web design thru something like dvd's at home or books, ETC.
I have looked into doing the online courses from colleges but I am leary of those. I dont want to spend 30k for something if I could get the same quality thru other studies. So is it possible to learn web design, programming etc without attending college? I know very, very little about any of this stuff. I am looking into finding a new vocation and it seems to me that where I live getting into some sort of computer technology would be about the only option for me unless I want to move. Thank you everyone for taking the time to read this and thank you very much to those who take the time to respond. |

Re: Can you learn about web design without college? If anything, until recently I would say most web designers have teached themselves, and not gone to college.

Re: Can you learn about web design without college?I don't believe many people go to college for just 'web design'. When I hear web design, I think more along the lines of graphical interface and Images, flash, ad design.
So web design would probably come down to ones artistic abilities and how well you can use third party design software (photoshop etc..) I believe you can teach yourself anything you want to. I'm graduating next semester with a bs in computer science. The degree (like most probably) does not teach you everything you need to know, more over, most of the material is stuff you'll never use in industry. With computer related jobs such as web design, programming etc etc... Your degree can help you, but if you are someone with 10 years of experience and know your skill on an expert level, you can get the job just as easy as a graduate can. Certifications help a lot too.
