Hood is on a distinguished road

making home dvds

hi
im not really sure where to post this
i recently bought a nice new OEM version LG DVD writer. it does all formats under the sun including RAM disks which is very nice
but i have no osftware for it!
please could anyone recomend (free!?) good software that i can buy/download free for it. my main purpose for buying it is to put some video files i have got on my pc onto dvd (that will work in dvd players etc)
so what kind of vidoe format do i have to have them saved as to convert them to dvd? do i need "dvd authoring software" what does it do? please explain??
im presuming i need dvd authoring software to convert my files into dvd compatible files, then more software to write them to dvd?
while im on the subject of dvds what software is good for making personal backup copies of my dvd collection? is dvd x copy any good? it cost a bit much, is there any free versions of it??? (or other prgrams that allow dvd copying for free?)
thanks guys.....................

I've never played with copying DVDs. To be honest I don't know a lot about this. But I'll look into it and see what I can learn. I'll let you know what I find.

Try looking for good deals for free after rebate stuff.

DVD X Copy is getting pretty hard to find, but their are alternatives for backing up your DVDs. If you are just watching them on computer, you can get a software for under $10 from Walmart (used it before, but can't remember the name) that does an excellent job making VCD or DIVX backups. Otherwise, for DVDs, I would recomend trying to find "I Copy DVDs 2." It is a great software that often goes for free after rebate a lot of times from places like CompUSA. I have used it before, and the quality is excellent. You could also keep an eye on http://www.freeafterrebate.info as they often have great free deals on software like that.

As far as your DVD burning software, I would recomend Nero 6.3 as well. It is well worth it if you spend the money.
