Windows XP gives you the alternatative when you install to install as a service available to all, or to start on command.
runs in the background. and never mess with it, when it works...
after you get the bugs out it runs great, and has no problems.
Unfortunately, when you have bugs, you have bugs, because everyone it seems is running Apache, on Linus or some other sytem.
When they do run Apache on a windows system. it is usually Apache 1. whatever, and rarely windows XP with Apache 2xx.
When that system is set up and running, it has no problems, and as such ythose individuals that do this, do not go to the forums to seek advice, they are too busy doing other things.

But how do you make this work with your virtual hosts setting in the httpd.conf file? Are you using SERVER ALIAS too?

I don't use a batch file, instead I use shortcuts on my Desktop. I have one for each...
  1. To rename the HOSTS file.
  2. 1 x START Apache & 1 x STOP Apache.
  3. 1 x START MySQL & 1 x STOP MySQL.

It's as uncomplicated as that with Windows ME but I suppose it's quite different with Windows XP. This is why I usually don't reply to questions that have to do with WinXP - simply because I wouldn't know what I am talking about...
