Increase partitions size while there is data on it

Hello,
Code:
The last two partitions on my hard drive are: hda7 1000 mb e2fs hda8 1000 mb vfat using as linux/msdos swap I have used linux fdisk to change the sizes to: hda7 1500 mb e2fs mounted as ext3 hda8 500 mb vfat using as linux/msdos swap
After a reboot fdisk shows the new sizes but df shows them as they originally were.
I can't do another reboot now as I am in the middle of my nightly "working on LFS".

My question(s) are:
Will the e2fs eventually see the new size?
Is there something else I should do?
I would try another mke2fs on hda7 but wouldn't that make the date un-retrievable like dos format?

I'm almost positive I did this a couple of years ago in my RH9 install,
but I think it was a vfat partition whose size was changed, and went fine.
Anybody? . Thanks , Howard();
