Cannot bind to socket:0.0.0.0:8080

Hello,

I need help starting Apache in my XP machine. I get the error that it cannot bind to socket:0.0.0.0:8080. Also it says only socket is allowed. Therefore I would like to check what else is running at 127.0.0.1, but I don't know how to do that any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks, msconfused

How did you install Apache? (Using apache_2.2.8-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi? Did you leave settings at defaults or what? Did you let it install it as a "service"? What?)

How did you configure it? (Did you leave settings at defaults? Did you execute "Listen 8080" somehow, somewhere? Did you put such a line in httpd.conf? Did you make any changes in httpd.conf? What?)

What did you do to get the message in your post? (Command-line start of httpd? Click on something somewhere? What?)

Was the complete message more like:

(OS 10048)Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port)
is normally permitted. : make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:8080
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs

What happens if you enter each the following in your browser URL line?

http://localhost

http://localhost:80

http://localhost:8080

Go to "Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services

Is there an entry for "Apachex.x" (Maybe it's already started; maybe as a service?)
Are there any entries that you might recognize, somehow, as something that could be bound to your port 8080?

Did you follow the hints on this thread? The parts about uninstalling IIS? http://www.gidforums.com/t-1727.html?

Regards,

Dave

Re: configuring apache

hi,

during installation I have specified localhost for server name and host and I have chosen current user at port 8080. When I have cheked the httpd.conf all the settings match my chosen options. Strangely enough I have found another configuration file under the conf directory with name httpd.default when I start apache as service with this conf file it works. Even though when I checked both files for configuartion differences, it appear to be none. Hence I don't know what going on?

Well, I didn't have a file named httpd.default after my installation, and I don't have any guesses.

However...

Two things come to mind:
1. If you found something that works, use it. Enjoy.

2. If you really want to dig a little deeper (because leaving some mysterious behavior bothers you as it does me), then:

Did you install anything else (before or after apache)? Like PHP, for example.

When you say that there appear to be no differences between the "good" config and "bad" config, did you actually compare the files?

What happens when you enter the following on a command line (in your Apache conf directory)?

fc httpd.conf httpd.default

Dave
