Remote access to XP Prof op. systemI'm fed up of the mound of CD's and the endless daily burning cycle to bring files from work to home and vica-versa. It's time consuming and - if you are like me - quite, quite confusing as when I'm in a rush I don't always label correctly and sometimes spend ages trying to find the latest up-to-date files.
I have a BB connection and can leave my PC on all day - and it runs better if I don't keep switching it on and off anyway. Is there anyway to set up a 'shared folder' on my home XP that I can access remotely via the web from my work PC? It would need to be password protected I suppose. My IP ocassionally changes when I log in to BB - will that effect anything?# You don't need my comp. spec' for this but if so - It's on all my other threads. |

I'm headed to bed right now. But I'll talk with you about this tomorrow.

Doesn't XP have some built in remote access solution for "support" purposes?
I know that in a corp environment you could use a service like GoToMyPC, but its a paid service and might not work or be worth it for you. But, I remember a friend of mine showing me a tool a few years ago that allowed you to do this...I'll have to check around. Also std apps like PC Anywhere, Laplink, Remotely Possible, etc all do this type of stuff...all commercial though. |

Wouldn't that involve setting my home PC up as a server?

Yes it does. You would need to make sure that this was ok with your ISP. I use a small FTP server program there is a FTP server that comes with XP pro but I don't like this option. I'll see if I can find that program for you it been awhile since I last used it.

ISPs get excited (in a bad way) when they hear the word "server". If you have a firewall I would suggest you start off by blocking all probes, setting up an ftp server at a non-standard port, and only allowing access to an IP range limited to your workplace.

Yeah, I have a firewall - but don't I have to install some option in XP to make my computer a server? The FTP thing sounds okay, though.

No, just look for a free ftp server software. I don't use one so I can't suggest...check on Tucows or some similar site.
