ntoskrnl.exe is missing

My problem

My dell laptop was frozen so I hit the shut down button twice to restart it. Then the following message showed up.

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file."

So I googled some, put in my XP CD and entered the Recovery Console. Then the following message showed up.

"Microsoft Windows XP(TM) Recovery Console
The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.
Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

C:\>"

So I was given any choice to choose OS. So I tried to run the expand command.

c:\>expand d:\i386\NTOSKRNL.EX_ c:\Windows\System32

It said "Access denied"

Then I tried

c:\>expand d:\i386\NTOSKRNL.EX_

It said it failed to expand. File expanded 0.

Then I tried

C:\>dir

It says "An error occured during directory enumeration."

Can anyone please help?

Thanks a ton,
Flora

Re: ntoskrnl.exe is missing

Try this

-Insert your Xp disk into the CD drive
-Restart Machine, and press F8 repeatively
-Choose the boot from command prompt option in the menu

At the command prompt, type in the following:

copy d:\I386\Driver.cab c:\system32\ntoskrnl.exe /v

Re: ntoskrnl.exe is missing

If all else fails just do a Windows Repair

Boot from your Windows XP Disc
- Select Enter Setup
- Agree with the EULA
- Press R to repair

All this does is it reinstalls your Windows Files etc... You wont lose any data or programs... All you'd lose is your system restore points and Windows updates... That's it...
