I posted another link closer to the beginning of this thread look for VDMS, this will wrap any old 16 bit game and allow sound emulation which is the main reason why old games won't play on XP. Just right clik any old game and choose run under vdms. It usually works first time, if not there is a DOC that you can read.If the game still runs to fast you will need to run turbo.exe
you can find a link on
www.tweakXP.com
this will slow down a fast computer by using up available memory.
Turbo.exe has been around for years and is quite well known but some idiot is advertising a new program called by the same name that is a website promo tool, just what the world needs another pyramid scheme!!

C&C 95

Anyone have any luck getting Command & Conquer 95 running under XP? I've tried the compatability mode but it doesn't work. I can install it fine but when I try to play it I get an error. (Sorry, I uninstalled it after several tries and didn't think to write it down).

Any ideas or should I just bag it? Thanks.

Hi
I seem to remember that some win 95 games were just wrapped in a window but used dos configuration in config.sys and autoexec.bat but winXP doesn't have that.
XP has config.nt and autoexec.nt, I once saw an article on an abandonware site about it.
I think you cant set up multiple versions of the files, and change the endings to .sys and .bat so you can have different set ups for different programs.
Go to your help console in XP and type in config.nt and it will give you some clue,
If you can't figure it out yourself you could try some of the abandonware sites for tips, even if your game isn't abandonware you can bet that somebody has had the same problem with a similar game.

Have you got any docs for the game???
Maybe it tells you the minimum set up required.
The problem is most likely to be soundcard related.
There may be a setup exe or com where you can reconfigure

old games working now

I tried out "dosbox" and it worked. At first the music was terrible but I kept changing the music card type in the vinstall without doing a complete new install until it actually worked..(had to test this because there is no option for onboard sound....I ended up using a roland configuration and it worked...
The dosbox is a little small ....but it works!
So my thanks to everyone for the suggestions! I'm a happy camper now.

Old MS-DOS games

I would love some advise on how to get DOS/windows 95 games running on XP. The main game in question is Dinotopia..can load most it and then the screen just goes black. What are your thoughts?

But I as many other do have games that will not play on my current system at least not without a little help. So that what I want to do is help people get those games that they enjoy playing to run again.

If you have a game that you would like to get help with running it let me know and I will try and help you get that game up and running. Of course I can make no promise that it will work because I’m sure that there are game out there that just won’t run with toady’s computer. Colonization is a good example of why this can happen. Colonization was developed before Windows 95 came out and was out for Windows 3.1 the problem was when Windows 95 came out they used a new file system, which would make colonization crash. This problem was only fixable one way with a patch that I was able to find some years later. But had it not been for that patch I’m not sure I would have got this game running.

So you may not be able to fix every game but I would say that most should be able to be fixed. So please feel free to post any games that you aren’t able to run and I will try and help out. I’m also going to be posting a few tips here for some of my game that I have I just want to make sure they work first.

I'm sorry that it taken me so long to get to this problem. Please start a new thread with the name of the game in question and I would be happy to see what I can find.

Re: Need help getting old games to run?

Hi,

Ive just sourced a copy of C&C Red Alert 95..

I know its possible to run this under XP.

However what i really wanted was a copy of the first C&C 95 edition...

I nearly got a copy on Ebay but some little b*stard pipped me at the post..

All i can now find is the older version of C&C.. Can i still run this under XP or will i need to use DOS Box??

Also will my lap top be able to read this relic of a game?

Any suggestions?
