Need help getting old games to run?I have been a gamer now for almost 12 years now and it’s amazing all the change that we have seen in the computer field and this includes games. I remember my first PC game civilization. That game by today’s standards it isn’t nothing but I still find myself playing that game to this day and I’m very happy that this game still plays on my computer. But I as many other do have games that will not play on my current system at least not without a little help. So that what I want to do is help people get those games that they enjoy playing to run again.
If you have a game that you would like to get help with running it let me know and I will try and help you get that game up and running. Of course I can make no promise that it will work because I’m sure that there are game out there that just won’t run with toady’s computer. Colonization is a good example of why this can happen. Colonization was developed before Windows 95 came out and was out for Windows 3.1 the problem was when Windows 95 came out they used a new file system, which would make colonization crash. This problem was only fixable one way with a patch that I was able to find some years later. But had it not been for that patch I’m not sure I would have got this game running. So you may not be able to fix every game but I would say that most should be able to be fixed. So please feel free to post any games that you aren’t able to run and I will try and help out. I’m also going to be posting a few tips here for some of my game that I have I just want to make sure they work first. __________________

Old Games & WinXPpcxgamer is right, old games that are fun, but can't play with new opr systems using different file systems NTFS and such.
Winxp is a bit complicating cause good ole Bill Gates wants you to use Winxp for office apps and Banking at home. And he wants you to buy the XBOX to play games. Why not more $$$ for him. I have found alot of my pc games won't work on xp but win98 plays them fine. That's why my desktop has 98 and my laptop has xp. Both of two best or worst worlds? I would love to build an old pc and have a copy of win3.1 After all thats where I learned most of my pc knowledge from anyway, like messing with dos config.sys files and autoexe.bat etc etc... Now I build home pc's with win98 or xp and the operating system does all or most of the work. kinda like calculators it does the math for me & I don't learn. NOT A GOOD THING!!! I hear all the time these fast sales people in the computer stores talk all this stuff to people & they end up buying a pc they don't really need or don't understand exactly what they bought. best wishes............. enya. |

Not sure about where you live but here all I have to do is put up a want ad in my newspaper or here at the office and people are throwing old PC my way. I got 13 offer for old PC when I did that all for free all they wanted to do was get they out of there houses. I even had one woman give me her old PC that was still in the box monitor and everything for free and she bought it to me even.
Only a 486 but hey it runs older games. Plus it makes me laugh I still remember when that was new and the best you could have everytime I boot it up and see that 486 with 16mb ram, 1mb video card. __________________

I am trying to make Lands of lore: Throne of chaos run on my computer (HP laptop with 160 meg of ram and a 500MHZ Pentium 2 processor with windows me) but it crashes after intro/choice of character. What can I do? Pierre-Marc |

Could you post me a link to a fan site for that game so that I can learn alittle more about it. I haven't every played it so I'm not sure about that one but I would be happy to take a look and do a little research on how to get it to run.

Try these two dos emulators for XPQuote:
On this page you will find info on two dos emulators that work under XP. I have used the one called VDMS. After you set it up all you have to do is right click on an old game and it is automatically loaded under the vdms emulator. It works first time on most games but I was unable to get it to work on Cannon Fodder 2. Junk ked |

Dosbox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net) is truly the best dos emulator you can find. It supports nearly everything you could want, even protected mode.
I don't think I've had an old game I couldn't get to run on dosbox, quite honestly. oldgames (search oldgames in google) has a huge support section for running, you guessed it, 'old games'. Last edited by pcxgamer : 02-Jan-2005 at 10:43.
Reason: Edited the first link was broken, second one is a iffy link.
