Chaintech Geforce 5600 FX problems

I hope someone can help me with this. I am have serious problems with my graphics card and I believe I have tried everything. First I guess I should tell you what I have, everything is brand new.

AMD 3200+
ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe 2.0 (nForce2 chipset)
Maxtor 200gig SATA
1X512 DDR400 PC3200
Chaintech GeForce FX 5600 Personal Cinema
400W PSU
CDROM,USB2CDRW,DVDRW
Windows XP pro

Problem is this when the card is in and running in the 8X mode with full hardware acceleration on I have all sorts of display problems. On the desktop and within menus and dialog boxes these lines form across the screen. The lines are made of many little dots. If I turn the hardware acceleration down a notch the problem on the desktop and in the menus seems to disappear. Though once in a while they will come back and I have to turn the hardware acceleration down even more. Max Payne II I can not play, there are all sorts of artifacts and the game usually ends up hanging. The Game Blitzkrieg is ok during all the video and animations screens but it has serious artifacts and corruption during the game play. Every once in a while my monitor will turn on and off and occasionally get a freq. out of range error. Here is a list of what I have tried…

Updated MOBO bios to 1007 (newest)
Tried the newest nForce driver 3.13 I believe
Tried about 7 different display drivers, I use the nasty file remover and driver cleaner and another utility to ensure all the old driver files are gone.
I have reinstalled windows several times
Checked my bios setting, everything is as it should be, from what I have been reading.
I have not tried to overclock this card

Strange thing is a couple of times it was working for a short period of time, I was able to play max payne 2 with no problems for several minutes before it all starts again and if I am able to exit out of the game the problem has also returned to the desktop. From time to time I can work from the desktop browsing the web with hardware acceleration on full and unless I open a lot of windows the does not seem to be any trouble.

If I can not get it working in the next day I am going to send it back to the store for a new one, unfortunately I can not upgrade I am stuck getting the same exact card, before I go through the trouble of sending it back I want try and make sure that the problem is the card and not some setting file I am missing.

I am hoping someone out there has experienced the same problem and was able to find a solution to it.

Thank You, BArt

Have you check you System, CPU, and Video Card temperatures?

temps....

CPU temp stays around 40C and the Motherboard around 20C.

The GPU stays 70C core and 40C ambient. From what others have told me those are acceptable figures for the GeForce FX models. I could be wrong.

I was also wondering if the power supply could play any part? I have a 400W ATX.

I done think it would be the power supply a 400W should be fine and I remember that when I had a power supply problem my computer would just all of a sudden turn off. But back to the point have you emailed the card maker? The last Nvidia that I had before my 5600 was an FX 5200 and it sounds a lot like the problems you're have now I was having with that card. When your monitor turns off do you have to reboot to fix it?

monitor turning off

The majoprity of the time when the monitor shuts off it will turn back on within seconds. Occasionally I will have to reboot it. If the monitor goes black during a game or a banchmark test I do usually have to reboot the system. But most of the time it computer comes back on its own. This problem is not existant at least on the desktop when the hardware acceleration is turned down.

If you have a way to test the card like in another computer or a local store that could check it for you. I think that this looks like a hardware problem your video card temp is a little high but not to bad the danger zone for those cards are 90C. But I can't think of anything else that may be causing the problem. And the fact that the problems that you seem to be having are very close to the same type of problems I was having with my 5200.

one more question...

First I would like to thank you for the help. So did you have to return your 5200? I forgot to tell you I e-mailed the card maker, they e-mail service said noone would be there to reply until January 5. I talked to a guy on the phone and he simply told me to reinstall everything.

Thanks again.

Yes I'm sorry to say that I had to return it. Your welcome I'm sorry that I couldn't be of more help. But this sound a lot like the problem I was having. But like I sayed you may want to test to make sure it is hardware problems.

I also have a Chaintech 5600. It appears to be a problem with overheating. The fan that is fixed to the CPu on the card is very fragile and prone to movement. I have just taken mine out and taken the fan off. I then fixed a more sturdy fan which is working fine. I also find it is much quieter.

I still find I'm having problems trying to update the drivers for it though. The NVidia update just sends the system into 4 bit colour mode.
