Firewalls

I thought that I would ask to see what you guys think. At my home I have a Linksys hardware firewall. After do research on the subject. I had come to the conclusion that hardware firewalls are the best way to go. And I felt really sure of myself and still do. But yesterday I was looking around and found a guy that does work for companies here I looked up a little about him and he seems to be a profession but he suggesting that people use software firewalls. So I was wondering. What do you guys think Software or Hardware.

I would suggest both.

If you already have a router/fw then something small (and free) like Tinyfirewall could atleast be usefull for logging purposes. Does you Linksys have good stats/logs on what it blocked, etc?

It logs all IP that try and connect to it and the port it hit. But it isn't turned on by default.

. . .

Without a doubt, hardware firewall is the fastest and most "bullet-proof," and doesn't suck up CPU power to do it's job. If I could only have one, it would be hardware-based. However, you might want to consider using both. A rules-based software firewall is superb for blocking outbound connections from your computer. This is especially ideal if you share the computer with someone who doesn't practice safe computing .
