Windows Media Player: Video Yes, Audio No

I tried to watch a DVD on my PC yesterday (through Windows Media Player 11) - the video was fine, but there was no audio.

I can listen to music, and I can watch the occasional snippet of video I get from my friends -- even VCDs -- so I am a bit baffled.

As some of you know, this is a new PC (Windows XP) that I had recently bought and this was my first attempt to watch a DVD with it.

I can watch the same DVD all right with Nero's Showtime Essentials 7, but with Media Player, there is no sound!

I downloaded Microsoft's Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility and there appears to be more than one installed MPEG-2 decoder on this system: Nero Video Decoder and ATI MPEG Video Decoder plus a few more. So I suppose it's not an issue of a missing plug-in for Media Player.

If you have a suggestion, I'm all all ears (eyes).

I am going to try to reinstall all Nero Software next, and then I will try to remove WMP11 and revert to WMP9, just to see if the Nero plug-in is incompatible with WMP11. I'll update this thread as I troubleshoot this issue.

Re: Windows Media Player: Video Yes, Audio No

Will it work with the old media player? [version 6 still exists on the system]

Type: mplayer2 in the run box.

Re: Windows Media Player: Video Yes, Audio No

Thank you for your reply, TurboPT.

By the time I read your suggestion, I had already:
  1. Reverted to Windows Media Player 9
  2. Un-installed (all) Nero 7 software

Before I did anything else, I went through some of the CDs that came with some of the hardware for this PC. In the mainboard (ASUS) box, there was one which offered a trial version of Intervideo DVD Copy 5. I installed it and just like that, I can watch DVDs on Windows Media Player now!

In WMP 9, under Tools > Options > DVD there's a new plug-in when I click on the Advanced... button. The plug-in is: DVD Xpack by InterVideo (iviaudio)

By the way, I think this Nero 7 is utter crap! I cannot seem to update the software -- been trying for days -- and having searched the Net, it seems like I am not alone. I just wrote an email to Samsung, the makers of the drive, and hopefully they will help to resolve this "nero not updating" issue - otherwise my next hand phone is definitely not going to be a Samsung!
