Hello, basically i have downloaded a file i shouldn't have! Now i cant do a system restore to a date pre-virus nor can i run anti-virus software. Any help i sgreatly appreciated.

If you own an AV disc, you should be able to boot to that and see if the program will run. Otherwise you can look for an online AV (like McAffee) which supposedly will scan your system over the Internet.

Ultimately, if nothing works, you'll have to reformat your drive. To backup your data files, I'd suggest using a Linux LiveCD to boot and then use it to back up your files to a thumbdrive. That also lets you AV scan them in a safe environment.

in future. make a backup of all you files every so often and also if you know how, make a ghost of ur pc in good working order so if you its F's up again you can just put on the ghost.

Boot Machine into Safemode and run the virus scanner there, if the Virus is running on one of your process you wont be able to remove it in Normal Mode
