My hard drive doesn't like me...

Okay, so I purchased a nifty notebook at the beginning of the month after downloading the latest Windows updates and installing Symentac Antivirus and whatnot, I've noticed that gradually the space of my hard drive is being used up, and I've hardly done anything. I've hardly created any new documents or added programs since the beginning. my hard drive is usually decreasing at the rate of one percent per day. My computer came with 160gb and after one month, one game install, Windows Updates, and Symentac, I'm down to 100gb left.

What gives? Is there constantly 1gb Windows updates being added to my computer everyday? Is the Symentac constantly adding new security features that I'm not aware of?

I'm somewhat, but not completely, a technical newbie, so please bear with me. Thanks for all of your help.

I Noticed A Decrease with my hard drive so i started looking for things that were changing constantly... system restore was my culprit so i started decreasing my maximum space for sysrestore and started backing up on my own and reclaimed about 5 gigs.

One Question though.

are you running firewall & anti-spyware programs?

How do you regulate how much of your hard drive System Restore takes up?

And yes, I am running Symentac Antivirus. I'm thinking this program is taking a big part of my memory but I'm not sure exactly how.

Right click on "My Computer", choose "Properties", then poke around for the System Restore properties (I'm using Windows right now so I don't know exactly where it's located). You probably only need to save the last 2-3 days of info, especially if you don't make a lot of changes to your system.

Symantec software is notorious for dragging down your system performance. NAV sucks up CPU cycles and eats a lot of RAM due to the real-time checking. You really don't need real-time checking as long as you keep your virus signatures up to date and either do weekly checks or set it up to do auto-scans. As long as you aren't visiting the "bad sites" and weed out your email then chances are slim that you'll get a virus.

Another thing you might want to do is get a anti-spyware program (lavasoft ad-aware or Spybot S&D) and scan your computer for spyware because it might be taking up space and slowing down your computer.

ok, turn off automatic updates as it kills memory when starting up your computer, and get a proggy which is free called ccleaner and it cleans up load of cappy files and old cookies, missing registarys and i cleared 20gigs off my computer

Just a question if this is still occuring - Are you using XP or Vista? If it's Vista - There's your problem.

If it's XP, it maybe that your CPU and Ram might be faulty as well for it to be running so slow with 100g's left...

C'mon I use Xp and nothing wrong happens as far as hard disk space is concerned. If I upload anything that say takes up a space of 10 kb it shows that the remaining space is 10kb less.Infact I started facing problems after I had installed vista followed by safari.I was compelled to switch back to XP.

Spot on!! Most users notice that after a few days of updating and installing various updates/software that a large chunk of their HDD space goes missing. 99% of the time its System Restore, Nothing else..
