can anyone one tell me the difference between a switch and a router and can your explain how a switch works

A switch is an intelligent repeater; it takes an input signal and sends it to the appropriate output port. It only works within a given LAN segment. It's better than a straight hub because each device receives its own dedicated channel.

A router typically is used between LANs; in homes it connects a home network to the Internet. It has more intelligence so it can do more than a switch.

A router is used to connect b/w DIFFERENT networks, ie : connect a LAN in your house to the Internet. This are 2 very different networks.

ill answer my own post,

A switch is a box were you can plug in lots of ethernet cables into it, The switch is then pluged into a router for internet access. Simple.
