total newbie need help

when first installing apache (v2.0.47), it asks for server name and dns stuffs. In my case, it is already filled with DNS/server name of my high speed internet connection provider. My question is ... can i change that to anything i want?

and if i make a web page and wants to associate it with an web address (say www.mypage.com), how can i do this?

i know this sounds very basic (and even stupid) but i've got no experience in web developement. i would appreciate any help

thanks

Editing Apache configuration settings

I suspect why no one replied sooner is because it's always helpful to include your Operating System info too...

Anyway, look for the filenamed httpd.conf to edit your Apache configurations - and yes, you are able to change anything in there...

Look for the file HOSTS in your system and include a line like:
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.0.1 www.mypage.com
where www.mypage.com is the domain name you want set your 'site' to. Of course there are other complicated ways too, but this is the simplest method to get something half decent just for developing your site.

Also you need to set up [gid=http://www.desilva.biz/apache/virtual.html]Virtual Hosts[/gid].

well, i did that and it didn't work ... i'm using win2k.
the weird thing is that when i first started the apache webserver, i couldn't use 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' to go to an initial page. Instead, i had to use my own ip address to get there.

so, what should i do in this case?
