How to compress mysqldump?

when i was moving this site, i was struggling to get my mysql dump files compressed

here's what i used:

Code:
mysqldump -C -u $username -p $dbname > dbbackup.dump

but i cannot be certain if that results in a compressed dump...

i think thats the right code... If your not too comfortable with that, you could always do a normal dump, and then tar it up.
