Is there any use trying download accelerators?

i've heard of viruses and spyware associated with them ,
are there any which are recommended that are free?

How it works that it download a particular file eg file.exe and searches for alternate servers and downloads file.exe from multiple servers so the download speed will be constant and not downloading from one server where the server would actually throttle you down based on its server load.

If your using broadband, download accelerators don't really work too well. If you're using dialup, they can make a difference. If you hunt around www.tucows.com, you should be able to find several accelerators that don't have viruses, etc. You may want to read the EULAs though, since some of them will install spyware (Gator was famous for that).
