How to display only a portion of the blog in WordPress

How do I get only a portion of the blog entry to post on the main page with a "Click to read for more" tag?

I have been looking through all the options, but I can't seem to find it.

In the visual editor there should be an icon that looks like two blocks with a horizontal dashed line between them.

Sorry to be thick, but I have no idea what you are talking about. Is this a setting under the site admin link? Or is there somewhere else I need to go to find this?

When you are writing or editing your posts, you have 2 views: the Visual and Code views.

If you're using the Visual view, you use the button that appears between the IMG and SPELLCHECKER buttons.

If you're in the Code view, you place your cursor in the appropriate place of your markup and insert <!--more-->.
