Unhappy

Kernel panic: No init found

Time to panic....

I can't boot into Linux Red Hat 9 since this morning. Linux doesn't boot up reporting:

Kernel panic: no init found
Try passing init= option to kernel

I wouldn't normally care about this (as I would have just format and re-install Linux) except that this time, I did not backup 4-5 months worth of scripts that I have been writing.

If anyone has ideas, I am all ears!

Priority No.1 is to get inside the filesystem just long enough for me to backup the files to a safe place...

What was the latest thing you did on your linux box? Also, what kernel are you running?

[edit]What other dialog is displayed when you get the error?

Also, read through http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=91503 seeing if that helps at all.[/edit]

The last hour that Linux worked...

1. I upgraded MySQL (server/client) to 4.0.16
2. Just completed testing some new script that uses InnoDB tables.
3. Then there was that little power failure (which was the last thing that happened before this morning)

Oh... and about the kernel: 2.4.20-8

What were you doing when you experienced the power failure?

What other dialog is displayed when you get the error?

Also, read through http://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...&threadid=91503 seeing if that helps at all.

Like I said, I was at No.2 (see my previous reply) when the power went off.

About the complete error message, I will have to look at it again... and will post here with details tomorrow.

It looks like I have yet another problem... my CDROM drive seems to be a victim of the power failure, it's not reading any CD I put into it.

I'll have to get a new one sometime this week... *sigh*

Still investigating this problem. No friends so far have experienced it.

Don't go buy a new CD Drive untill at least another 2 days. There might be something that can be fixed that what is currently causing your cd rom prob and kernel prob to stop.

I have some old cd rom drives that are like 24 speed. But you live a little too far away from me to send you one

I've put Linux on hold till after the 5th. Thank you for the effort, I appreciate it.

Once I am ready to fix this... I will reply here.

Thanks for the replacement CDROM drive offer (you're too kind) but it will be cheaper to just buy a new one from here
