The making of a good blog

Since blogs have been around for several years now, most people probably think they know all about them and what makes a succesful blog site. For those who don't (or just think they do), I offer the following ideas.
  1. Make regular updates. Search engines, especially Google, rank your site using various algorithms. One of the criteria Google uses is how frequent the updates are, especially for blogs. So regularly posting to your blog site will help your search engine rankings; the recommended schedule is 3-4 times a week.
  2. The best blogs are usually ones devoted to a specific topic, e.g. politics, programming (especially about a particular language), computer tech, cars, etc. With my site, I like to talk about a wide variety of things but that is the purpose of my site: expanding the knowledge base of people. Hopefully word-of-mouth will eventually lead to more traffic but it's not a pressing issue for me right now. For people who want to get a better Page Rank or better listings, then sticking to a single topic is probably better.
  3. Technorati is one of the big names in blogs and other user-created media. It's essentially a dedicated search engine for photos, videos, and blogs. Once you have a blog, you can take a look at your ranking on Technorati; as more sites link to you (especially other blogs) the better your ranking. This is a big deal for people who want to become "professional bloggers" or get into journalism.
That's all I can think of right now but I hope other people will have some ideas to share. The more info we have, the better we can make GIDBlogs.
