Frames for a layout

I don't understand why so many people think frames are a bad idea for a layout. It can help reduce code needed because the navagation keeps loading from one htm file while the rest of the site doesnt need the same code over and over in other htm files.

Also , are there really any incompatabilities with frames anymore?

Just wondering what you guys think about frames in general

Re: Frames for a layout

I don't think many believe that frames are a bad idea for layout, they're a bad idea for the search engines.

Back in the day, frames were popular because not many people knew about, or had web servers that supported, server side scripting. Now nearly every free hosting offer comes with PHP at least. So reusing markup -- like headers and footers -- is not such a pain anymore.

Frames are still useful but you must know when to use them and if you really think they do a better job at making your web page user-friendly e.g. for "restricted" pages, where one probably has to login first.
