I have a HDD which is detected Western Digital 40Gb but unreadable, the fat table seems corrupted, there is a large amount of photos on the drive. There is a multitude of recovery softwares out there, but I think if I mess too much t\with this drive, I might screw things up and loose my chances - so I cannot venture in trying various programs... I would like some advice if anyone has done this successfully with a particular type of program. Granted there are many situations causing this, all I know is that the fat table is corrupted.

I have never actual had to recovery a bad drive thank god but a friend of mine did. So I asked him about the software he use and he told me about a program called GetDataBack he said it was a little hard but this program worked well. I hope this is what you needed.

Possible - Ghost makes images of partitions or clones hard drives, what I need here is something that can unscrew the fat table - I think I will opt for getdataback, I got more advices suggesting that one than any other softwares

Well, wanted to fill you in on what happened, I finally decided to use Easy Recovery Pro from OnTrack - I tried to use the WD utility, scan disk etc but all of these tools were hindered by the fact that the fat was really screwed up, that program read the disk block by block and I was able to recover 4Gb worth of photos! So, that was a success!
