Need help setting up a LAN.Hello!
I'd like to share my internet connection with a friend of mine who lives a floor above me. And according to our measurements it would require about 15 meters of wire. But none of us are expert on hardwares and stuff. So could you please help me decide on the type of wire and stuff that we required to connect these two PC's. By the way, both PC's are running WinXP and have ethernet ports. Thanks! netnut. |

Re: Need help setting up a LAN.How are you connected to the Internet? Who is your provider? (ISP)
What is your budget like? On the limited info you've given, and depending on your answers, it looks like a Wireless Router would be your best option, along with either fitted wireless cards or Wireless USB Adapters. (the latter being a simpler option) But if you have a clear and safe run for a cable and won't be moving furniture around for a very long time (ie, changing the location of the computer) then network cabling would do the job too. Keep this link handy as it will be referred to often once you update us. Practically Networked |

Re: Need help setting up a LAN.Well, I have this ADSL BroadBand internet to which I connect using a USB router. So both the ethernet ports are free for use, that's why I'd prefer to use cables. And yes, there's not much moving around to be done for the cabling so that's the best option for me I think.
Thanks for the reply. netnut. |

Re: Need help setting up a LAN.Okay, this sounds fairly straight forward then... what model Router do you have? For example, is it a Netgear DG834? How many ports (connections) does it have spare?
I'm assuming you'll have at least 3 ports spare, and if you're sure about the length of cable required, then all you will need is a 15m RJ45 to RJ45 UTP Cat5e Cable. All you will then need to do is connect your friend's computer to the Router using the cable (yours will already be connected to the router) and then configure his/her computer to the network following the directions in the Router's manual. Once again, keep this tutorial handy, it's very thorough: Sharing a Cable/DSL Connection If you don't want your friend to hog your bandwidth then you could have him/her install this Bandwidth Limiting Software on their computer... but, all things considered... the router and their connection to it is in your room. Traffic Shaper I'm sure others will have suggestions on your questions also. |
