wacom intuos 3 tablet support fedora core 6

my intuos 3 won't work on fedora core 6, despite their being compatable drivers installed (came with fedora core 6). i've tried what most people found success with, and edited xorg.conf to include sections specifying the tablet. this proved useless (i did restart the compute after changing the file). anybody know what's going on?
